About the role

We are seeking a highly organised and proactive Office Manager to join our dynamic team. The Office Manager will be responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the Lowy Institute office at 31 Bligh Street, Sydney, supporting staff and researchers and contributing to a positive and productive work environment. Working at the Lowy Institute is a unique opportunity. In this role, you will support colleagues across a range of areas including office administration, employee onboarding, domestic and international travel management, work health and safety, and the day-to-day running of the office.

You will be part of a small, high-performing team of skilled operators, working across the Institute. As Office Manager, you will lead the day-to-day office operations, including managing facilities and all office supplies. You will be the key point of contact to manage external partners, including our corporate travel provider and IT provider. You will be responsible for managing office budgets and tracking expenses to ensure cost effectiveness. You will develop and implement office policies and procedures to enhance efficiency and productivity. The Office Manager will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and senior leadership team to support key staff needs, including onboarding and inductions.

Key attributes

The successful candidate will have excellent organisational skills and strong attention to detail. You will be a natural problem solver, willing to roll up your sleeves to get things done. You will have a good sense of humour and the ability to work well under pressure. Ideally, you will have strong IT skills and the ability to manage stakeholders. You will have experience managing a variety of calendars, schedules and competing priorities, and have outstanding project management skills.

Research Assistant, Transnational Challenges Program

The Lowy Institute hosts distinguished Australian and international speakers on foreign policy, defence, politics, aid, and development. With a focus on the Asia-Pacific region, the Institute’s research, events and conferences attract significant global attention, and our experts produce commentary for the world’s leading news outlets.

The Lowy Institute is seeking a part-time Research Assistant to work with the Program Director of the Transnational Challenges Program.

About the role

The Research Assistant will work closely with the Program Director of the Transnational Challenges Program to provide exceptional research support across a number of projects relating to a variety of thematic issues on terrorism and extremism, disinformation, technology’s impacts on security and society and democratic safeguarding. They will also provide assistance in managing dialogues and events.

Key attributes

The successful candidate will have excellent research, writing, and organisational skills, clear communication skills, and tertiary qualifications in national security studies or international relations with a focus and subject matter experience of any of the following - terrorism, violent extremism, democracy studies, disinformation.

Appointment

This is an initial six-month appointment with the possibility of extension and promotion. Sydney or Melbourne based applicants are preferred, but there is flexibility regarding location base for the right candidate.
