2024 Lowy Institute Media Award keynote speaker and finalists announced

The Lowy Institute is delighted to announce that ABC Chair Kim Williams AM will deliver the 2024 Lowy Institute Media Lecture on Wednesday 25 September.

The Lowy Institute Media Award has been presented each year since 2013 to recognise excellence in coverage of international affairs by Australian journalists and media outlets.

“At the Institute, we believe that just as it is important for Australia to have a voice in world affairs, it is also important to have Australian eyes on the world,” said Dr Michael Fullilove AM, the Executive Director of the Lowy Institute.

“No Australian media outlet has more journalists reporting from foreign soil than the ABC, so we’re delighted that its Chair Kim Williams AM has agreed to speak at this year’s Lowy Institute Media Award.”

The Institute is also pleased to announce the three finalists for the 2024 Lowy Institute Media Award:

  • Avani Dias from the ABC for a series of stories as South Asia correspondent, including her reporting for Foreign Correspondent and Four Corners.
  • Matthew Knott from The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age for his work as foreign affairs and national security correspondent, including his reporting on the AUKUS partnership and Australia’s plan to acquire nuclear-powered submarines.
  • Ben Packham from The Australian for his work as foreign affairs and defence correspondent, focusing on Australia’s defence industry and capabilities.

On this year’s judging panel, Dr Fullilove was joined by The Age journalist Jewel Topsfield, ABC journalist and foreign correspondent Natalie Whiting, The Australian’s Managing Editor Helen Trinca, and Lowy Institute Board member Mark Ryan.

The winner of the 2024 Lowy Institute Media Award will be announced on Wednesday 25 September. The winner of the award receives a prize of AU$20,000 and a distinctive trophy by Dinosaur Designs.
