Dr Melanie Pill is a Research Fellow at the Lowy Institute. She oversees and progresses the climate change portfolio of the Institute’s Indo-Pacific Development Centre.

Melanie has extensive knowledge and expertise in climate change adaptation, mitigation, and loss and damage. Her experience attending negotiations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) allows her to link the challenges of climate change in the Indo-Pacific with global policymaking, economic development and finance.

Melanie has been a consultant for regional organisations and governments in the Pacific, providing advice on matters relating to resilience-building in the region and development of Vanuatu’s Nationally Determined Contribution to the UNFCCC. In her previous roles in Australian government departments and the Institute for Climate Energy and Disaster Solutions, she established strategies to reduce Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions and developed principles for locally-led adaptation projects in Southeast Asia.

Melanie has an Honours degree in Economics from Germany, and a Master of Environmental Management and Development as well as a PhD from the Australian National University.
